A Real Peregrine Ring Tone
Back in June of 2005 I got to visit Freedom, one of Mariah and Kaver's offspring from 2002. I shot a video clip of him in which he expressed his displeasure at my presence by uttering his territorial call.
I'd always thought about the possibility of taking the audio from that clip and making a ring tone out of it, but in it's original version it wasn't well suited to the intended task. Well, I finally found an easy-to-use open source audio manipulation app called Audacity, and the result is a ten-second ring tone that you can download and place on your cell phone.
The Freedom Ringtone is a 162 kb mp3 file. It should be compatible with most contemporary cell phones.
You can save the file by right-clicking the link (or left-click if you've set up your mouse for left-handed operation) and choose Save, or Save Target, or whatever save option appears in your browser window. Save it somewhere on your computer's hard disk.
There are a number of ways to get the tone onto your phone, including sending it to yourself as a text message. If you can connect your phone to your computer via a cable or Bluetooth you can transfer it that way, though you may need additional software like BitPim. You can also download and install tonethis software (it's freeware), which works with a great many cell phone models.
The tone works pretty well, IMO. You might get some odd stares from passers by, and I can't vouch for the behavior of nearby pigeons or other prey birds when your phone rings, but give it a try and let me know what you think.
